Hello and welcome to the Student Association for Edinburgh College! All Edinburgh College students are members of the Students’ Association. We are actively involved in a number of projects including the College Healthy Working Lives programme, the College sustainability group and the NUS backed Student Footprints looking at tackling carbon in the community. The Association also runs social events and has a presence at College events like Freshers’ Fair. As well as this we are here to help with any college related issues you have. I have been at Edinburgh College for three years and have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. If you do join the college I would encourage you to participate in our Class Rep system and to be active in the Students’ Association. It’s a great way to meet people, expand your skills base and become involved in shaping the Edinburgh College of the future. Good luck in choosing your course! Lupe Gonzalez, Student President 2011-12. The Association Committee, led by the Student President, is here to represent you. Students’ Association Executive Officers are elected each year and comprise students in the following roles:

Today, (18th September) sees the Scottish Government give official backing to Scotland’s first dedicated Hospitality and Tourism Academy for secondary school pupils. The Academy has been specifically designed to support Scotland’s £11bn* tourism industry.
The Parliamentary Reception will be hosted by the academy’s local MSP, Kenny MacAskill who will provide an introduction to the event, while an official address with be given by Fergus Ewing, the Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism.
The launch of the East Lothian Hospitality and Tourism Academy comes in response to the Scottish Government’s agenda of kick starting employment opportunities for young people and streamlining the transition between school, college, university and work. The Academy also aims to raise standards across the hospitality and tourism industries by providing young people with the appropriate skills and attitudes to meet employer needs.
Ray McCowan, Director of Curriculum, Strategy & Academic Planning at Jewel & Esk College, explained: “We really want to make hospitality a first choice career for young people across Scotland. Many people ‘fall’ into the industry while studying, perhaps as waiting staff or other roles but few see the myriad of career prospects available.
“The ability to manage a team, provide excellent service and control quality are all skills that are very much in demand, not only in Scotland but at resorts and with hotels across the world which is why so many well-known brands have been happy to give us their support.”
The East Lothian Hospitality and Tourism Academy is an innovative partnership between Jewel & Esk College, Queen Margaret University and East Lothian Council, backed by some of the world’s biggest hotel brands including; Marriott Hotels, Novotel, Macdonald Hotels and Resorts, Jurys Inn, Mercure and Best Western Edinburgh Capital Hotel. Prestonfield House, one of Edinburgh premier hotels has also pledged support as has Fraser Suites Edinburgh.
Kenny MacAskill MSP said:
“I am pleased to be sponsoring this exciting event at the Parliament – Jewel & Esk have done a fantastic job, alongside East Lothian Hospitality & Tourism Academy at providing opportunities for students who are very keen, willing and able to study and learn new skills and to promote this important industry across the country. The Scottish Government are of course committed to providing training and employment opportunities such as hospitality and tourism and I am delighted to welcome them to the Parliament.”
The initiative involves students from three East Lothian secondary schools, Musselburgh Grammar School, Preston Lodge High School (Prestonpans) and Ross High School (Tranent), aiming to raise the profile of the hospitality and tourism industries and expose young people to the tremendous wealth of career options which exist providing a range of education and work experience opportunities. The British Hospitality Association estimates that with the right levels of support an additional 475,000 jobs could be created across the UK by 2020 within the sector.
Thirty-eight pupils from the three schools will be the first to take part in the new Academy which started just weeks ago.
Professor Alan Gilloran, Vice Principal (Academic) at Queen Margaret University, explained: “The hospitality industry is an important part of the Scottish economy and nurturing home grown talent is necessary to meet the needs of businesses and to strengthen the Scottish hospitality industry. We need to equip a new generation of young people with the right skills and fresh approach by promoting the attitude that service excellence is the only acceptable standard.”
The East Lothian Hospitality and Tourism Academy will also address the growing problem faced by many Scottish businesses which struggle to recruit local people with the right skills and attitudes to meet their needs.
Patricia Rainey, Cluster Director of HR at Marriott Hotels, said: “Hospitality and Tourism are growth sectors in the economy and need the best and brightest talent to satisfy the demand. There are excellent opportunities in our industry to grow and develop careers for our young people, whether through an academic route or from the ground floor up.
“Marriott has an absolute commitment to attracting and recruiting the best talent and that is why the fit is so good. As an employer we offer learning and development opportunities to young people and at the same time benefit from them practising these skills in our business. The Academy presents a great business model and one in which we are proud to be a partner.”

"Just a quick update on the filming of the DVD. The students from Edinburgh College have been brilliant and so enthusiastic about the East Lothian learners work. They have all taken time to speak with those involved and on Wednesday of this week I was at the session with the Woodwork Group in Fisherrow. Some of the comments were really encouraging, for example, one member of the group said that there had been a real buzz and excitement in the room. This was so true! I hope that your students are enjoying the process as much as we are." Client quote.

Cut your costs, increase your productivity & improve staff morale
Sounds too good to be true, but it’s not. Edinburgh College offer you an opportunity to:
You can achieve all this, and more, by taking a student from Edinburgh College on work placement. Here’s how it works.
Using placements for busy periods
A student can be a vital extra pair of hands when you need them. They may also be available at times of the year when you need help the most, increasing your productivity. Work placements can be flexible to meet the needs of your organisation.
Using placements to free up your staff time
Why not bring in a placement student to carry out some of the workload of your permanent staff? In this way you can free up these staff to focus on other aspects of your business.
Using placements as part of the recruitment process
The majority of our students who go out on placement are offered jobs by their placement provider at the end of their course. Why? Well, it’s partly the quality of our students, but it’s also because businesses can use student placement as a “try before you buy” scheme. It gives you an opportunity to evaluate a particular student’s skills, attitude and personality; to determine whether or not they’re a “good fit” with your organisation. Many companies find that in this way they can avoid the normal recruitment costs and be sure of what they’re getting – which is a new recruit who knows your business and can hit the ground running!
Even if you don’t recruit the student who’s been with you, participating in the placement programme raises your profile amongst our entire student body and increases the likelihood that our highly-qualified and experienced students will apply for your vacancies.
Using placements for special projects
Many businesses have things they’ve always wanted to do, if only they had the time and resources. Bringing in a student on placement to finally get to work on that project can be hugely beneficial. A student placement can enable you to go beyond “business as usual” to achieve real competitive advantage.
Using placements to benefit existing employees
Our student on placement will need supervision and a degree of mentoring. Many employers have found that the employee who takes on this role benefits as much as the student. It increases their sense of worth, their pride in their job and their awareness of their own skills and abilities. In other words it is great for their morale and can be a useful way of providing employees with their first leadership and management experience.
Using placements to bring fresh ideas
A student can bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm and a new perspective into your organisation. They will be learning new techniques and approaches from their lecturers at college and can bring these ideas to invigorate your organisation.
Do I have to pay the student?
No.
What support will I get?
We’ll support you all the way. We’ll draw up a contract with you, defining the placement student’s role and duties. As part of that contract we provide you with a named individual at Edinburgh College whom you can contact at any time. We also set out the type and frequency of regular contact from the College. If, for any reason, the placement is not working out it can be terminated immediately. This normally affects only a tiny minority, if any, of our placements, but it is there as a safeguard for your peace of mind. At the end of the placement you’ll normally get a feedback report from the student, which can be full of useful insights to help your business.
Work Placement Assessors
Students are allocated a dedicated workplace assessor. The assessor is responsible for supporting the student in the workplace with any related work placement tasks or assessments.
Take advantage of this opportunity now!
We currently offer placements in the areas of:

Edinburgh College acknowledges the diversity and dignity of individuals and promotes the equality of opportunity for all. The college actively promotes equality, diversity and inclusion by removing barriers to education, training and employment opportunities by widening access through development of a flexible and inclusive culture.
At Edinburgh College we recognise that we each have a right to dignity, trust and respect and a responsibility to demonstrate the same to others.
Our Respect campaign runs throughout the year and profiles national events and issues like Ramadan, Black History Month and LGBT month.
Our Single Equality Scheme is as relevant to staff as it is to students. We take Equality & Diversity seriously and are signatory to the disability Two Ticks scheme and partners with See Me, Scotland’s national campaign to end the stigma and discrimination of mental ill-health.
Students at Jewel & Esk College got their first sight of Scotland’s most exciting and high tech teaching facilities on 17th November 2008 when the doors opened on the college’s multi million pound e:volve campus redevelopment project.
No stranger to change, things have been evolving at Jewel & Esk for years. The iconic ship building at Milton Rd was opened in 1978 by Prince Charles as the newest wing of Leith Nautical College. Founded in 1903, Leith Nautical was one of only three nautical colleges in Scotland and recognised by many as one of the leading training centres of its type in Western Europe.
In 1984, the government controversially decided that nautical studies should be centred at Glasgow and Leith Nautical College ceased to offer marine related courses. The college’s non-nautical offering was retained at the ship building and merged with Esk Valley College in Dalkeith to be re-launched as Jewel & Esk Valley College. The courses on offer took in a whole range of trades and technology based subjects and included one of the first modern musicianship courses in the country.
Initiated in September 2005, the e:volve project has heralded a rebirth for the college. The most dramatic of transformations in the college’s history, e:volve has seen the creation of a new campus at Hardengreen in Midlothian and the complete redevelopment of the Edinburgh Campus including the building of the Club.
The e:volve project has been successful in its aim of giving students the best facilities in which to learn and at the same time giving local communities a fantastic new leisure and learning centre.

Learning in your community
We know that for some students, attending classes in college is a non-starter. For a variety of reasons they do not want to or are not able to get to college.
Our Communities Section was set up to break down barriers to learning by providing appropriate learning opportunities in local communities. Working closely with a number of organisations, we deliver and promote a range of courses and training programmes in the community, covering East Lothian, Midlothian and SE Edinburgh.
We currently offer:
If you are interested in joining one of our community classes please contact :
outreach@jec.ac.uk
Edinburgh College has around 35,000 students studying at four campuses: Granton, Milton Road, Midlothian and Sighthill. We also teach at outreach locations throughout our local communities.
The college covers a wide variety of subjects across different teaching Centres.
Our students come from all sorts of backgrounds: adult returners of all ages; school leavers; school pupils choosing to study part of their curriculum at college; students studying full time, part time, evening or in the community; apprentices; and those undertaking short courses or studying towards professional development awards.
We have a dedicated staff of around 1500, both academic and support staff, all of whom have a common goal – to help you get the most out of your learning, so you can take the first or next step towards the career of your choice.
The description of the College's courses in its prospectus and on its website represents the College's aspirations as to what will be delivered. However, for various reasons, the courses actually delivered may be different. For example:
A change could involve the replacement of a course with a new course, variations to course content or structure, the merger of courses, or the withdrawal of a course.
The College may make a change to a course for the reasons set out above, or for other reasons where it is reasonable for the College to do so.
If there is a change to a course about which you have expressed an interest, the College will let you know as soon as possible.
By expressing an interest about a course to the College, you agree to these rules about changes to courses.
The College has a duty to ensure that all staff employed by the College, and students going on a placement that will involve regulated work with children or protected adults, are checked against the PVG Scheme to verify that they are not barred from working with vulnerable groups (i.e. children and protected adults).
Staff
Here is a summary of our staff policy:
1. All staff, including the Board of Governors, will be checked against the PVG Scheme regardless of their role within the College.
2. All new appointments are made subject to a check against the PVG Scheme which is satisfactory to the College.
3. All existing staff who were not checked against the PVG Scheme when they commenced employment with the College will be checked against the PVG Scheme. As per Disclosure Scotland guidelines, this process of retrospective checking will occur between 2012 and 2015.
4. Foreign nationals will be checked against the PVG Scheme on the same basis as UK nationals, although it is recognised that the information on which the check will be carried out may be restricted.
5. All staff have a duty to inform the College as soon as possible after they become aware of any pending or actual change in their PVG Scheme Record or their PVG membership status.
6. If a check against the PVG Scheme indicates that an applicant is barred from working with children (and/or protected adults, where applicable), the College will be unable to employ or continue to employ that person.
Students
Here is a summary of our student policy:
1. All students on specified courses will be checked against the PVG Scheme. Offers are conditional on this check being completed satisfactorily.
2. If the outcome of a check against the PVG Scheme is not satisfactory to the College, the offer of a place on the specified course may be withdrawn.
3. Checks against the PVG Scheme are generally processed at the start of session and may take several weeks. It is therefore in the student’s best interests, should they have any concern about the information which may be contained in their PVG Scheme Record, to seek advice at interview or at the earliest possible stage in the application process.
4. The College pays for all checks against the PVG Scheme for students applying for specified courses.
5. Disclosure of information by the student at interview is not sufficient. Decisions will be based on the check against the PVG Scheme and additional supporting information from the student.
Any student queries should be directed to the course team or discussed in confidence with a Student Adviser (contact Student Support Services).

Aim
The SWEET project will pilot and evaluate the delivery of work-based training using synchronous collaborative learning, supported by BigBlueButton and Moodle, to deliver the REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene qualification from a distance but directly in the workplace to employees in the Hospitality and Tourism sector.
Objectives
The project will:
The e-Car project is an innovative transport initiative aimed at investigating the practicalities of using electric vehicles to reduce carbon travel costs.
Edinburgh College as lead partners currently have five zero emission e-Cars within the project based at our campuses and partner sites that can be used by staff to alleviate the need to use their own vehicles for travel. The e-Car can be used for travel between sites, to collect visitors, work visits and more…
The e-Car Project includes:
the e-Car charging point project, a cost effective and durable post, designed and manufactured in-house, installed at strategically positioned locations to support the e-Car user. This is being developed into a marketable product.
the e-Car booking system developed and designed by Edinburgh College staff, which is used by partners and associates across Edinburgh and the Lothians
the e-Car research from the vehicle and the user to evaluate car performance, the influence of external factors and the user experience
Students and staff at Edinburgh College are involved in the e-Car project and associated activities with anticipated wide reaching benefits:
“Launching our electric vehicle project this year has been excellent experience for our Automotive and Mechanical Engineering students, keeping their skills up to date with the latest industry developments.”
Ross Milligan, Automotive & Mechanical Engineering Team Leader

Essential skills for Scotland; essential skills for YOU
Most people come to college with work in mind – some to brush up on skills they already have, some come as the first step to learning new skills with the aim of entering the workforce. At Edinburgh College, we consult regularly with local employers and Chambers of Commerce to find out what they are looking for when they recruit new employees.
We want to equip you with the skills and knowledge that we know employers need; not just the technical skills, but also the life skills that will make you an effective, productive and creative employee and which will also help you in all other aspects of your life. We want Edinburgh College students to be able to achieve their full potential and to leave us confident that they have the skills to make their contribution to Scotland’s future.
The skills that employers value include the five ‘core’ skills:
Recent research carried out by the college with Midlothian Enterprise Trust has also shown that the personal attributes most valued by employers are:
So you can see that there is more to learn at college besides all the technical skills you will be taught as part of your course. You will also need to learn all the life or ‘soft’ skills that employers are looking for.
Learning for life
The college has responded to this demand by creating opportunities and services to enable our students to develop these critical ‘soft’ skills. These services can provide you with:
There are several ways in which you can learn these vital skills. You could have a tutor who will work alongside you throughout your course. Or, you could have individual or group support to develop study skills, or attend additional drop-in sessions to build up all the core skills – communication, numeracy, IT, working with others and problem solving. You may be offered a work placement as part of your course, and you will have opportunities to take a wider role in the college community or other citizenship projects.
Now that the college has put these services in place, it’s up to you to take advantage of them. At the end of the day that’s really what all these skills amount to – taking charge of your own life. Now’s your chance to do it!
Vocational qualifications prove to an employer that you are capable of taking on a job and doing it successfully. Some cover broad subject areas, others relate to specific skills. They can also help you to get a place at university.
Most qualifications we offer are accredited and awarded by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) although we also offer qualifications from other awarding bodies such as City & Guilds, EMTA, COSCA and ILM.
Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA)
SQA are responsible for developing and awarding vocational qualifications in Scotland. All SQA vocational qualifications are based on the concept of ‘building up’ to a qualification bit by bit using study units. We offer 3 different types:
National Qualifications (NQ)
These offer a broad range of options, available at a number of levels:
Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND)
HNCs and HNDs are work-related (vocational) higher education qualifications. They are widely respected and valued by employers both in the UK and overseas, and can also count towards membership of professional and technical bodies and other employer organisations. They are accepted for entry to many degree courses, often directly into 2nd or 3rd year. Both comprise Higher National Units and a Graded Unit.
HNCs can take one year to complete full time and two years part time (or in other situations such as distance learning). HNDs take two years full time and can also be taken part time (which takes longer).
Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs)
SVQs are designed in consultation with employers and, because they are based on standards set directly by the industry, are a guarantee of ability and competency.
They are available to people of all ages and at all stages of their careers. The qualifications comprise Workplace Assessed Units which are assessed in the workplace or under simulated workplace conditions. SVQ awards are available at five different levels.
Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF)
The SCQF is a way of comparing the wide range of Scottish qualifications.
The SCQF is a way of comparing the wide range of Scottish qualifications. It covers achievements such as those from school, college, university, and many work-based qualifications. It does this by giving each qualification a level and a number of credit points. The level of a qualification shows how difficult the learning is. The credit points show how much learning is involved in achieving that qualification.
The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework promotes lifelong learning in Scotland. It supports everyone in Scotland, including learning providers and employers by:
There are many different kinds of Scottish qualifications: Highers, SVQs, HNDs, Degrees and many more. Each course at Edinburgh College has an SCQF Level. You will find this listed with the course entry on this website or in the course guide.
You can use the table to compare courses and qualification levels.
For more information on The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework, visit www.scqf.org.uk
The Centre for Engineering & Clean Technology has been training engineers ever since the days of Leith Nautical College. Since the 1970s we have built a strong reputation in the field of measurement and control engineering for the oil and gas industry, and are now moving forward with exciting new developments in clean energy. Our students have the opportunity to be at the forefront of these developments.
Edinburgh College provides high quality engineering training to deliver three objectives:
The Centre for Engineering & Clean Technology offers courses in the following specialisms:
Measurement & Control Engineering
We are one of 3 UK providers used by OPITO, the training body for the oil and gas industry to train up apprentices in Measurement & Control Engineering. Apprentices hone their skills using dedicated control and instrumentation workshops and a state of the art control room simulator. We have built a strong reputation in the industry, with many of our students winning awards. A Edinburgh College student has won OPITO’s prized Apprentice of the Year title in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Automotive Engineering
Students learn in our realistic light vehicle workshop at the college, using modern diagnostic facilities. In the last year, we have also established a cutting edge electric vehicle research centre. Working with Mitsubishi and Siemens, staff and students monitor our fleet of electric vehicles, gathering data on performance and cost effectiveness. We also manufacture charge points for electric vehicles.
Mechanical Engineering
We deliver courses for apprentices and full time courses for those who wish to move into employment or move on to university on co mpleting their course. We also deliver the HNC Engineering with Power Generation, training engineers who will be well placed to work in power generation for the 21st Century, including the renewables and nuclear industries.
Courses at Edinburgh College cover a wide range of subjects and levels. From full time HNC or HND programmes to intensive short courses; introductory evening classes to Professional Development Awards; commercial courses to part time qualifications – we’re sure to have the course for you.
Here we explain what the different qualifications are and how you compare them, as well as exploring Modern Apprenticeships and the different skills you will need for further work and study.

I have always been an outdoors person and my main sport is road cycling. I use the bike to commute to work as it keeps my training going as well as beating the traffic. I live in West Lothian, so it’s about 20 miles each way. It’s an interesting route which takes me through the countryside to Balerno, through Colinton, Fairmilehead and on to Eskbank. Cycling is certainly a good way to wake you up in the morning. I feel more energised for the day ahead and the trip home allows me to unwind. |

I’m originally from Morocco. I came to this country in my early 20’s to do a Phd at Glasgow University. I have since pursued a teaching career with the Open University before joining Edinburgh College. I teach a variety of social scientific subjects and am very interested in exploring the interdisciplinary potential of social sciences. This is reflected in some of the courses I have developed ( Psychogeography). In addition to this, I am also interested in developing thematic (integrated units), an area our team is currently exploring. Furthermore, I am very interested in developing cross-cultural units. Currently, I am delivering a unit called “Growing up in Scotland”, which consists of getting my students to collaborate with Iraqi students via a blog , in a project which aims to explore aspects of growing up/issues affecting young people in these respective countries. I live in Portobello with my wife and 2 young daughters. |

Edinburgh College has a dedicated Communities Section working with local Community Partners, particularly in South East Edinburgh, greater Craigmillar, Midlothian and East Lothian, to provide learning opportunities in local communities.
Not Sure College is for You?
We know that some students just can’t get to college. There can be all sorts of reasons for this – family commitments, physical ailments, lack of confidence, some people just don’t want to or don’t feel ready to attend a course ‘in college’. If this sounds like you, don’t be put off, read on for information about how you can access learning!
What We Offer You
We promote and deliver a whole range of courses and training programmes at Outreach Centres in your local area as well as in college.
The Outreach Courses we offer vary widely – some are designed to teach you a new skill or craft; some to brush-up on an existing talent and some to help you return to studies after some years away from education. Some prepare you for college based studies.
Get In Touch
To find out more e-mail our Communities Co-ordinators, Alex Galloway ext 7052 or Mary Bowie ext 7056.
Who are our Community Partners?
Edinburgh College works with many community partners across East Lothian, Midlothian, Edinburgh and the Borders. Too many to list them all here.
We work with partner agencies to bring courses to people who might otherwise not think of college as an option. These could be women or men returning to education after time spent at home raising children, people with physical or mental conditions, ex-offenders or former drug addicts.
How does it work?
The Communities section of the college is often the first point of contact when it comes to partnerships. But other sections of the college are, of course, involved too including tutoring staff across all four faculties and student services.
What sort of thing do we do?
If you want to find out more about some of the partnerships Edinburgh College is involved with you can take a look at the Hibernian Community Foundation with whom we recently launched a project or the Baton Project which runs in partnership with several agencies.
If you want to find out more about the programmes we run or about becoming a partner then e-mail us.
Community Planning is all about official groups and organisations, like Edinburgh College, working with community groups to design and deliver public services.
Edinburgh College is committed to and actively involved with Community Planning with Councils in East Lothian, Midlothian and Edinburgh.
Click on the link to find out more about community planning in East Lothian, Midlothian and Edinburgh.
We have outreach centres at the locations listed below. If you click on the place name you will be able to see exactly where each centre is and find out what we offer there:
Fees vary according to what you wish to study but some courses may be free to students according to individual circumstances.
If you are a school pupil and not old enough to leave school until December but would rather complete your education at college than school, our Winter Leavers programme could be for you.
These are the courses that we offer to Winter Leavers
If you had something different in mind then you might want to think about applying for one of the courses advertised in our main Course Guide. You need to remember, though, that these courses are a minimum of one year in length and that you'll need to show your enthusiasm for and commitment to the course at interview.
We know that it’s a big change, moving from school to college. That’s why Edinburgh College have a dedicated Schools Team to support you through the move. We meet with you on a weekly and individual basis to find out how you are getting on and give you advice if any problems do crop up. We work with the Careers Advisor to let you have the best information about what to do next, after you’ve finished at Edinburgh College.
One thing that lots of people ask is 'Is it just like school?'
No! Our students often comment on how different from school life at college is.
If you want to ask any questions and find out more email Schools Coordinator or call us on 0131 344 7054.
Even if you are only in S1 you might have already started to think abut what you would like to do when you leave school. Or maybe you already know what you want to do. There are lots of choices open to you and you'll be able to explore these whilst you're at school. Coming to college is just one option.
There are 46 colleges of further education in Scotland. Further Education (F.E.) is education you do after you've left school. F.E. Colleges are a great place to learn because you can:
Our award winning Communities and Schools teams work in partnership with schools and community organisations to provide courses suitable for everyone from school leavers to adults returning to edcuation after a break.
The emphasis is very much on breaking down barriers to education and providing appropriate learning opportunities - both in the community and in college.
Read on if you want to find out more about either our community courses or our provision for schools.
Even if you are new to secondary school you might already have started to think about what you would like to do when you leave. There are lots of choices open to you and you'll be able to explore the options with your Guidance Teacher or Careers Officer.
Coming to college is one of these options. At Edinburgh College we offer a wide range of courses for winter leavers and have an award winning team of staff dedicated to support you in making the transition from school to college.
Leaving school can be a stressful time. There are lots of options open to young people and it can be confusing deciding what's best.
We have a dedicated Schools Team at Edinburgh College who work with schools across the region to provide support for school pupils in the transition to college life. Our Winter Leavers Programme gives young people not old enough to leave school until December, the option of completing their compulsory education at college.
If your son or daughter is interested in this option, they should discuss it with their Guidance Teacher at school. The Guidance Teacher can provide them with a full list of the courses we offer and an application form. The form needs to be signed by you and the Guidance Teacher before being submitted to the college.

Edinburgh College bursary and hardship funds are limited, and sometimes are not large enough to support every eligible student. We will consider all eligible applicants but may give priority to those who need financial help most.
Financial support may also be available for living costs and other specific costs such as childcare or travel. This support is usually means tested.
FE Funding
Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMAs)
Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
An EMA is a weekly payment made to young students aged 19 and under who have left school and are studying a full-time course below HNC level. An EMA is assessed on household income as evidenced by parents' Tax Credit Award Notice.
If you turn 20 during the course you may be assessed for a Bursary (a higher allowance). This is also means-tested.
You should apply as soon as you have accepted a place on a course. The EMA/Bursary application is available via your online account. The application will give more detailed advice on the information and documentary evidence we require to process your application.
Student Services can advise you on what to apply for, how to complete the application and what supporting documentation you may need. We are open throughout the summer.
All students aged under 18 are eligible for essential kit and travel (if outwith a 2mile radius of the nearest campus) regardless of parental income.
Loans
If you are studying for an HNC or HND, you may be eligible to apply for a student loan. You can get general information from SAAS www.saas.gov.uk or for personal advice, please check with a student services advisor.
Discretionary funds
Help may be available from the higher education hardship fund or the further education hardship fund, for those in greatest need. For more details, please speak to a student services advisor.
Childcare
You may be able to claim help towards the costs of registered childcare. For full details ask a student services advisor. Applications are made via your online account. Please ask for our Help Towards Chidlcare leaflet.
Expenses & Benefits

Financial support may also be available for eg living expenses, travel and essential kit. Student services will be able to advise you about your personal circumstances.
When you are a student at Edinburgh College, we encourage you to express your opinions and make suggestions, both formally and informally. Student Services staff are here to help you do just that. We can make sure your suggestion gets to the right person so that the improvement you have pinpointed can help everyone. If you are unhappy with an aspect of college life, we can make sure this is raised in the right forum so that something can be done about it. And if that’s not possible, we’ll make sure someone tells you why not.
If you need some help to express your opinions, we can help with that too.
And if you’re a confident person who is happy to speak out, then why not stand as a class representative?
The Student Services team supports the work of the Students’ Association, which acts as the formal ‘Student Voice’ on college committees and the Board of Governors. Every Edinburgh College student automatically becomes a member of the Students’ Association. The Association Committee, led by the Student President, is here to represent you. Students’ Association Executive Officers are elected each year and comprise students in the following roles:
If you are interested in representing other students and helping to make a difference to the college community, please think about standing for one of the roles. It will also look great on your CV!
A key part of the Student Voice is the class rep system, where each class elects a representative to take their views and opinions to the Students’ Representative Council (SRC). It is important that everyone participates in this system, as this is how we gather feedback from you about the services the college provides and how we can make things better for all of you.

The tutors in the Learning Support Team are experienced in supporting students with:
We can meet the support needs of many students with appropriate study skills guidance. However, some students have particular challenges that require specialist support.
If you have particular needs you will be offered a specialist assessment leading to a Personal Learning and Support Plan, (PLSP). This sets out the forms of support that you will have access to throughout your course.
Support can include occasional or more regular meetings with a member of the support team to help directly with aspects of study. More information on support in specialist areas is given in the sections below.
Technology is playing a bigger role in meeting additional support needs and the support team can arrange for specialist equipment for use in College and for loan for use at home.
If you are on Higher National course you may qualify for the Disabled Students Allowance to purchase necessary equipment to help you with your course. Our team can give advice and guidance on making applications.
Whatever your concern, it is important that you make contact as early as possible. You can do this through Student Services by e-mail, phoning 0131 344 7100 or in person at either campus, or you can contact one of the support team directly by telephone or e-mail.
The College makes provision for students with physical disabilities in a number of ways. The Edinburgh and Midlothian campuses have a range of building features to facilitate access for wheelchair users. Disabled parking is available at both campuses, as are disabled toilet facilities.
If you have a physical disability, we can offer you the following services:
Visual Impairment
We have excellent provision at the college for students who have difficulties with their sight. Visually impaired students can access information via a computer by the use of speech software. For students with some sight, computer technology allows students to maximise what sight they have by enlarging print or altering the colour and background of the screen. Computers with this assistive technology are available at both campuses.
If you have difficulties with your sight you can be offered support in a variety of ways:
Study at college can be challenging for many students, especially if it is some time since your last experience of formal study. Often, a few brief sessions of Study Skills can set you on the right track to making a success of your studies.
However, some students may find that there are areas of study - perhaps in Core Skills - that continually give you difficulties. The support team may work with Core Skills lecturers in class to support groups of students but can also give individual support to students with such general difficulties in discrete, one to one meetings.
Mental Health or Medical Problems
If you have a mental health or medical problem, you may find that your condition or medication can make study at college problematic. Planning and organisation of studies can be particularly difficult.
The support team can offer discrete discussion and guidance to support you in your studies.
Hearing Impairment
The College can provide a range of services and forms of support to students who experience difficulties with their hearing who are either oral or BSL users. A member of the support team can offer qualified note-taking, lip-speaking and sign language up to Level 2 BSL to students on mainstream courses. In addition, there is a range of technological aids available, including personal loop systems, individual radio aids and pagers.
Apart from practical help with courses of study, the support team can also provide regular meetings with a specialist tutor for advice and guidance.
Specific Learning Difficulties
Dyslexia is the most well known specific learning difficulty but there are also other challenges to learning such as dyspraxia, dyscalculia, attention deficit disorder etc.
You may already be aware that you have such a difficulty and may have had a formal assessment carried out while at school. Or you may have a suspicion that you are dyslexic but have never had your difficulties investigated.
Several of the support staff are specialists in dyslexia and can carry out screening and needs assessments to determine appropriate support. In addition, screening for scotopic sensitivity can be carried out.
If you have dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties we can offer you the following services:

SCOTLAND'S largest electric vehicle project is set for a massive expansion – after the first year of the scheme saw the low-carbon cars cover 18,000 miles without a single breakdown.
Every journey made by five electric vehicles (EVs) was monitored for 12 months and the project leader said the information collected showed EVs could cut both carbon emissions and motoring costs.
Ross Milligan, Curriculum Development Manager at Jewel & Esk College, said: “There are still questions to answer but EVs definitely work for short journeys in the local area. A whole year and 18,000 miles without a breakdown is pretty persuasive evidence. The cost of charging the five vehicles was around £630 over the year, against almost £3000 to fill similar cars with fuel to cover the same distance.”
Mr Milligan said the future impact could be far greater, as EVs gain popularity and drivers become more confident using them. When the project started, it was thought the cars would have to cover 80,000 miles to break even because an average EV cost £10,000 more than a similar car using traditional fuel , he explained – but the falling cost of technology meant the break-even point was now more like 40,000 miles.
The five EVs monitored by Jewel & Esk staff were based at the college’s campuses in Edinburgh and Midlothian, as well as Stevenson College Edinburgh, Midlothian Council and the Scottish Qualifications Authority.
The project started in August 2011 and was funded by SEStran (the South East Scotland Transport Partnership), which has put in further resources to allow it to continue. Edinburgh Napier University, East Lothian Council and Edinburgh's Telford College have joined the project and taken EVs during the last year and ten cars – a mixture of Mitsubishi i-MiEV and Nissan Leaf models - are now being monitored from Jewel & Esk.
Mr Milligan added: “The cars are popular and well-used by all partners and we are ready to extend into the whole of Fife and West Lothian to test those bigger questions – how far will the cars go on a single charge, are there enough charging points and can you recoup the high initial costs?”
The expansion will see data collected from up to 15 vehicles and their drivers. Potential new partners include St Andrews University, Fife Council, West Lothian Council, NHS Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service.
Roddy Yarr, Environment and Energy Manager at the University of St Andrews, said: “This project dovetails perfectly with our twin agendas of sustainability and reducing energy costs. We have to wean ourselves off fossil fuels and at the same time, develop our research and skills capability in low-carbon technology. This EV project ticks a lot of boxes and we are delighted to be involved.”
Prof Tariq Muneer, an expert in EVs at Edinburgh Napier University, said: “Schemes like this are crucial in the future of EVs because the results – both hard data and user experience – help us to identify challenges and how to tackle them. Real projects like this – tied in with relevant skills and research – will drive the EV agenda forward by building public confidence. It might be a few years before the cost of EVs and the number of charging points make them suitable for the ordinary motorist – but this project is moving us in the right direction.”
The project is crucial in making electric vehicles more mainstream across Scotland and further afield. It is closely tied in with new skills and research; students at Jewel & Esk are halfway through building ten charging points to be used in the project and EV technology has been embedded in motor vehicle engineering courses at the college.
Three scholarships are available at Jewel & Esk as part of the project, while Mr Milligan and JEC colleague Mike Jeffrey are doing PhD courses at Napier to develop their EV knowledge.
Steve Tinsley, Director of Innovation and Enterprise at Jewel & Esk College, said: "This is one of the UK's most significant electric vehicle projects. We are delighted to be growing and Transport Scotland will provide infrastructure to make the extended scheme work – new charging points and black boxes in EVs to collect the data. This stretches the project and gives us a chance to see how the vehicles perform on longer journeys.
“The skills side is also really important as there is no point having more and more EVs on the roads but a lack of people with the technical know-how to offer advice and solve problems.”
Russell Imrie, chairman of SEStran, said: “We are delighted to continue supporting this innovative EV project, which is linking up effective monitoring of the technology with skills development and research. The extension of the scheme is crucial in showing people that electric vehicles can cut carbon emissions and long-term motoring costs – and become mainstream on our roads.”
Tom Henderson, Fleet Services Manager with Fife Council, said: “This innovative project allows close monitoring of EV performance and the user experience. As a local authority, we want to reduce carbon emissions and transport costs in the long term. This project offers the potential to do both.”
PANEL
PIONEERS of green transport are being invited to bid for a pot of money totalling £100,000 to turn their ideas into reality.
The Green Transport Prize, supported by SEStran, is being launched as a spin-off from the electric vehicle project, with funding from the new Edinburgh College (launched on 1 October as Jewel & Esk, Stevenson and Telford colleges merge), St Andrews University and Edinburgh Napier University.
The best scheme put forward – by an individual, community group, public or private sector organisation from anywhere in the world - will be awarded £50,000 to develop the project, with the two runners-up getting £25,000 each. The best entries will be showcased at a Green Transport Prize event hosted by The Scotsman Conferences and Edinburgh College in May next year, with the winners and runners-up announced on the day.
“We are looking for green transport solutions not only for Scotland, but ideas that could be used globally,” said Steve Tinsley of Jewel & Esk College. “There is a tremendous amount of innovation and enterprise in this field in Scotland and we want to tap into it – but the prize is open to great projects from around the world.
“We really hope that this pilot will be a great success – and will become an annual award and focus attention on Scotland as a world leader in sustainable transport.”
Suggested themes for entries to the Green Transport Prize include: urban transport solutions; rural transport solutions; water-based transport solutions; logistics and freight; and projects showing sustainable transport options need not be an everyday reality for one country and a luxury for others. A panel of experts from science, technology, education, industry and government will select the winners.

Financial Reports
The college financial year runs from August to July and in common with all public organisations our accounts should be available to the public.
The annual accounts are audited by a firm of auditors appointed by the Auditor General for Scotland.
The accounts enter the public domain in about March the following year after they have been presented to the Scottish Parliament.
The work carried out by KPMG LLP in relation to these financial statements does not involve consideration of these matters and, accordingly, KPMG LLP accept no responsibility for any changes that may have occurred to the financial statements since they were initially presented on this website.
The college publishes a variety of reports and strategies:

The College values run through the heart of our organisation. Our values guide all of us, staff and students, in all that we do.
Our values are our five TICCS:
The college is set to join the EDUROAM wifi network, allowing students and staff to use Wifi networks at a large selection of academic institutions, as well as allowing members of those organisations wifi access at our campuses.
Watch this space for more information in the coming weeks.
The college has embarked on Green Impact, an environmental accreditation scheme supported by the Greener Living Fund, sponsored by DEFRA and led by the National Union of Students. Universities across the UK have been taking part in Green Impact for three years as an integral part of their sustainability agenda. Jewel & Esk is one of the very first colleges to participate.
Green Impact empowers individuals and departments to reduce their environmental impact by encouraging, rewarding and celebrating practical environmental improvements. The scheme challenges departments to exercise a number of easy practical actions that will help the environment. It provides a clear and simple way to measure the college’s environmental performance over a set period of time, as well as encouraging the opportunity for students and staff to work together.

SWEET Project overview
Workbased learning has inherent difficulties associated with 1) limited access to direct tutor support; 2) efficiency of delivery for small numbers of learners; and 3) the quality of the learning experience for isolated students.
The SWEET Project will develop and evaluate a course delivery methodology which addresses these issues using synchronous web conferencing with workbased learners within the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism sector. BigBlueButton is an open source application which incorporates a variety of media to give employees an interactive, remote learning experience: desktop sharing, VOIP, presentation, webcam, shared whiteboard and text chat. The project will integrate BigBlueButton with Moodle to create and evaluate a workbased learning environment which brings the qualities of simultaneous classroom delivery to cohorts of isolated learners.
Background information
College perspective
The Further and Higher Education Sector is faced with the dilemma of delivering its programmes in the face of substantial financial cuts, while at the same time maintaining and continuing to develop the quality of its education and training programmes. In this context, the procurement costs of commercial VLE and other interactive applications may prevent smaller institutions from acquiring the hardware and commercial software required to establish and maintain an online learning capability. Open source online learning applications offer an attractive alternative as there are no procurement or licencing costs associated with the products – which explains why Moodle has firmly established itself in the FE/HE sector with an expanding institutional user base.
Edinburgh College was an early adopter of Moodle and is now one of many colleges within the UK Moodle community. The SWEET Project aims to further develop Moodle’s standard VLE functions by integrating BigBlueButton, an open source application which supports synchronous audio-visual interaction and shared online desktop between tutors, mentors and learners within a controlled learning and communication environment.
Employer perspective
The continuous development of vocational knowledge and skills in the UK workforce is crucial for business and industry to remain competitive in an increasingly global marketplace. Employers, however, may be unable or reluctant to release employees to attend traditional classroom-based courses. Open and flexible learning, enhanced by VLE delivery and tutor support, provides employees with access to training opportunities in the workplace or at home; but the dropout rates for this form of learning are considerably higher due to problems associated with social isolation and lack of immediate direct interaction with tutors and fellow students in the course of learning. The integration of a synchronous collaborative learning into an already well-established and affordable VLE will introduce proven benefits of face to face education and training (ie the motivation to continue and succeed associated with real-time tutor-student and student-student interaction) to workplace-based, community-based and remote learners. Reducing the amount of travel for training also contributes to the sustainability agenda.
A New College for Edinburgh City Region
On October 1st 2012, Edinburgh College was formed from a merger of Edinburgh’s Telford College, Jewel & Esk College and Stevenson College Edinburgh to serve Edinburgh and the Lothians.
The merger of the three colleges moved one step closer on 20 April, as the merger proposal document was submitted to the Scottish Government.
The business case for the New College has been agreed by the Boards of each of the three Colleges, as well as the rationale set out for the new college, along with the academic and financial benefits that the new institution will bring.
The submission of the merger proposal document signifies the next major step towards the College’s Vesting Day on 1st October, this year.

Creating a New College for Edinburgh City Region
In 2011, Jewel & Esk College and Stevenson College Edinburgh launched a consultation document explaining why we want to create a new institution across the city region. In November 2011, Edinburgh’s Telford College decided to become part of this exciting project to create a dynamic new college serving over 40,000 students.
The document was unveiled before an audience including a range of partners who work with the colleges – businesses, schools, universities, local authorities and other public bodies, community groups and many more.
Jewel & Esk Principal Mandy Exley and her Stevenson counterpart Brian Lister outlined the range of benefits they believe will be delivered by a new college. These include a combined economic impact in excess of £120 million a year and the creation of national Centres of Excellence to deliver skilled people to work in the key economic sectors identified by government – including Energy & Clean Technology, Creative Industries and Tourism.
They explained why they believe that a larger college of greater reach and scale will work more effectively with communities and raise additional income - by attracting more international students, developing its work in exporting skills and knowledge and delivering bespoke training for business and industry.
Consultation
The consultation process ended on 30 September 2011. We received a range of responses from staff, students and external organisations. You can read some of the external feedback here.
Although the consultation is now complete, you can still send your comments to newcollege@jec.ac.uk and they will reach the project team. Please ensure you provide your full name in the email.

The new Edinburgh College has announced the name of its new Principal.
Mandy Exley, who is currently Principal and Chief Executive at Jewel & Esk College, will take over the position when Edinburgh College launches on October 1.
Her appointment provides the final key link in the process that will allow the creation of a bigger, stronger and better college serving Edinburgh and the Lothians.
Ian McKay, Chair (Elect) of Edinburgh College, said: “We are delighted to have someone of the calibre and pedigree of Mandy Exley lead Edinburgh College at the start of this exciting journey.
“We have given a commitment that Edinburgh College will change the face of further education in Edinburgh and Lothians and with Mandy’s previous experience at the helm of Jewel & Esk College, and the vision she has for the new College, we are ideally placed to fulfil our ambition.”
The rigorous selection process to find a Principal for what will be one of the biggest and most influential colleges in Scotland has been conducted over a number of months. In a new development, the process also included the involvement of the leadership of the student body in the college - the President and three vice Presidents of the Edinburgh College Students’ Association. This was seen as an important part of working with and for students in the new College.
John Martin, President of Edinburgh College Students’ Association, said: “The Students’ Association were pleased to be invited to be a part of the interview process, and particularly the value that has been placed on our opinion.
“Students should be at the centre of every decision making process as colleges across Scotland go through unprecedented changes and tribulations in the coming years and I hope that this sets a precedent for all future appointments of major office holders within Colleges, including membership of Boards of Governors.
“I congratulate Mandy on her success and look forward to working positively with her over the coming year to make sure our students get the best possible experience out of their life-changing time at Edinburgh College.”
Ian McKay added: “We believe it’s the first time that the student body have played a part in a Principal’s appointment. That illustrates the depth of the recognition of, and commitment to, the students, who we have always said are the most important people in the new College.”
Mandy has a long history of leadership in education in Scotland having served for the last two years as Principal at Jewel & Esk College and previously as Principal at the University of the Highlands & Islands Perth College. She said that she is looking forward to Edinburgh College playing its part in securing improved prosperity for everyone who lives and works in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
She said: “The creation of Edinburgh College is about a journey from good to great. The three existing colleges are really good in their own right but together, they can deliver great results.
“The College aims to deliver the very best education and training to students.
“By achieving that, we have an opportunity to build an economic powerhouse – to play a vital role in getting individuals back to work and to deliver skilled people needed in those economic sectors where Scotland can enjoy a genuine competitive advantage.”
Mandy added that with each college having an impressive reputation for forward thinking and innovation, it would allow ‘centres of excellence’ in key learning fields to be developed in the new College.
She added: “The College itself will become a ‘centre of excellence’, building on the existing strengths of the three colleges to foster growth, opportunity and economic development.
“We are confident Edinburgh College will compete with the best in Britain and that it will be a College we can all be proud of.”
Mandy has worked in education for more 20 years and her career has been both in England and Scotland, working in large inner city colleges in Birmingham, Manchester and Stoke and rural colleges in Gloucestershire, Perth and the Highlands and Islands.
Mandy's work has been recognised beyond the college and she has served on a number of Government and Scotland’s Colleges’ Task Groups including the current Government Change Team. She is a Board Director of the Scottish Institute for Enterprise and has a particular interest in Public Value and leads on promoting this work for Scotland’s Colleges.
The College will operate from four main campuses employing more than 1,500 staff; Granton (formerly Edinburgh’s Telford College), Sighthill (formerly Stevenson College Edinburgh) and Milton Road and Midlothian (both formerly Jewel & Esk College).
The College, a £60m business and the biggest FE college in Scotland, will accommodate more than 35,000 students – the biggest student body in Edinburgh – when it opens next month.

The Centre for Built Environment & Sustainable Energy is based at Midlothian Campus. Students work in a range of specialist workshops, and with highly experienced and motivated staff.
At Midlothian Campus, we are now working to establish Scotland's first solar meadow array. This “outdoor classroom” will be an excellent environment for our students to become familiar with the latest solar technology, and findings from staff and student research into their operation and their interaction with plants and wildlife will feed into the industry. The panels will also generate enough power to take Midlothian Campus off the grid. Students in this Centre will have the chance to work with a range of renewable technologies, including installation and maintenance of air source heat pumps, supplied by Ferroli.
The Centre for Built Environment & Sustainable Energy offers courses in the following specialisms:
Electrical Engineering
Our students work in classrooms and specialist workshop areas, using industry standard equipment including test rigs. We train to 17th Edition standard. As well as a range of full time courses, we also offer bespoke short courses to help keep the workforce up to date. Please contact us for details.
Construction
Edinburgh College offers sector leading delivery for apprentices. Our apprentices come from small firms and well known larger organisations across Edinburgh and the Lothians. We have an excellent track record of our students’ success in competitions, producing winners and highly placed entrants in national competitions such as SATTT (Scottish Association of Timber Trade Teachers). One of our previous students held the prestigious title of Scottish Adult Apprentice of the Year, from across all trades.

This week saw the launch of Scotland’s first dedicated Hospitality and Tourism Academy for secondary school pupils.
The East Lothian Hospitality and Tourism Academy is an innovative partnership involving Jewel & Esk College, Queen Margaret University, East Lothian Council and a number of hotel groups.
The initiative, which will involve students from three East Lothian secondary schools, aims to raise the profile of the hospitality and tourism industries and expose young people to the tremendous wealth of career options which exist providing a range of education and work experience opportunities.
The partnership organisations are responding to the Scottish Government agenda of kick starting employment opportunities for young people and streamlining the transition between school, college, university and work. Importantly, the Academy also aims to raise standards across the hospitality and tourism industries by providing young people with the appropriate skills and attitudes to meet employer needs.
Alan Gilloran, Vice Principal (Academic) at Queen Margaret University, explained: “Hospitality and tourism are critical to the Scottish economy. In some areas of the country hospitality and tourism standards are excellent. Scotland has wonderful food, a stunning landscape and a rich cultural heritage, but all too often we let ourselves down with our service delivery. If Scotland wants to be a world-class tourism destination, we need to equip a new generation of young people with the right skills and a fresh approach. Through the Academy, we will promote the attitude that service excellence is the only acceptable standard.”
Thirty-eight pupils from Musselburgh Grammar School, Preston Lodge High School (Prestonpans) and Ross High School (Tranent) will be the first to take part in the new Academy. They will have the unique opportunity of accessing academic knowledge and practical skills in ways that will equip them with the best chance of securing the best jobs.
Ray McCowan, Director of Curriculum, Strategy & Academic Planning at Jewel & Esk College, explained: “Most young people and their parents don’t view the hospitality and tourism industries as a first destination career choice – it’s more often a stop-gap job until something better comes along. We might hear of the ‘straight A’ pupil who aspires to being a doctor or a lawyer, but it’s not often that young people specify they want to be an event, restaurant or hotel manager or even a hotel receptionist. The Academy partners want to increase awareness of the full range of roles within the industries, as well as the career progression, transferable skills and travel opportunities.”
Entry to the Academy is competitive, with places available for not just the high achievers, but with opportunities for a much wider group of talented young people. Pupils will experience a two-year programme with the option to attain either a Hospitality & Tourism Industry Award or a Hospitality & Tourism Management Award. If the pupils successfully complete the programme they will be able to progress to employment or into a course at college or university.
Shamin Akhtar, Education Convenor, East Lothian Council, said: ”In today’s climate, young people need to leave school with more than qualifications. They need skills for learning, life and work which - in today’s competitive climate – employers are increasingly demanding. Using feedback from our industry partners, the Project Team has built a curriculum which includes employability skills, certificates, relevant and high quality work experience and business mentoring as well as gaining more traditional qualifications. The shared teaching with our partners at QMU and JEC also allows young people to experience college and university whilst still at school which will raise their aspirations and enable them to make educated career choices which are right for them as individuals.”
Backing the project are some of the world’s most significant industry players – Marriott and Novotel have signed up as business partners, as have Macdonald Hotels and Resorts, Jurys Inn, Mercure and Best Western Edinburgh Capital Hotel. Representing the local market, one of Edinburgh’s most prestigious hotel organisations, Prestonfield, has pledged support, as well as Fraser Suites Edinburgh.
Ray McCowan continued: “We are delighted that some of Scotland’s most prominent hoteliers, as well as the international hotel groups, are working with the Academy. Their contribution in offering industry knowledge will be invaluable. They are also vital in helping us bring the hospitality and tourism industries to life for the young people. By offering work placements and providing industry professionals to speak about their roles, they play an important part in inspiring and informing pupils about the opportunities in, and scale of, the hospitality and tourism industries, not only in Scotland but also globally.”
Professor Alan Gilloran said: “The Academy represents partnership working at its very best. It brings together the vision of two educational organisations and a local council, as well as harnessing industry expertise and responding to very real social, economic and business needs.”
Damien Yeates, Chief Executive of Skills Development Scotland (SDS) said: “We know thousands of jobs will be created in Scotland’s vital hospitality and tourism industry in the coming years. By offering training and work experience to young people at this crucial stage in their life, East Lothian Academy is not only helping to build lasting careers but is also providing the skilled workforce businesses will need to meet future demand.”
Professor Gilloran concluded: “Thriving hospitality and tourism industries are critical to Scotland’s economic growth and to bolstering employment opportunities for our younger generation. These industries are our shop window to the world and we need to secure talented young people to work in them and help sell our country to visitors. The Academy will not only prepare them for this challenge, but will offer these students a brighter future.”

A 21-year-old beauty therapist has made it to the final five at the Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards 2012 as Beautician of the Year.
Katie Mathieson, from Bonnyrigg, is a Beauty Therapist at Jewel & Esk College's Bliss beauty salon and was delighted to hear that she had been shortlisted in the national awards as Beautician of the Year.
Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards celebrate the burgeoning hair and beauty industry in Scotland and highlight those in the beauty industry who leave their clients looking and feeling fantastic.
Katie said: “I was really shocked when I found out I was in the final five of the competition. I didn't know that my colleagues had nominated me, and I can't wait to go along to the awards night later this month.”
The talented beauty therapist studied at Jewel & Esk College and was given a full-time position at the college's on-campus Bliss beauty salon after showing her skills, enthusiasm and drive during a student placement at the salon.
Bliss Maternity Cover Spa Manager, Theresa Boyle, said: “Katie really has been born and bred at Jewel & Esk College and was kept on as a full-time Beauty Therapist after showing her ability to work hard on placement, as she regularly volunteered to do extra hours in the salon. We just couldn't let her go after her placement!”
Theresa added: “She has a very loyal client base. In fact, they're so loyal that when she's on holiday her clients won't go to anyone else but her. I'm so happy she's in the final five of the competition. She's done so well and really deserves to win.”
Katie was nominated by staff at Jewel & Esk College for the national hair & beauty awards, and will find out if she is Beautician of the Year at the glitzy awards night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow on the 19th of August 2012.
